I remember thinking we might never get out of the house again. But here we are, two and a half years later, and it takes me about the same amount of time as my friends with newborns to get out the door. (Kyra is three, so I’ll take that win.) And we take her everywhere.

The truth is: Getting out is good for our kids, and it’s good for us.
Fresh air, new experiences, a change of scenery, and a chance to feel human again — all of it matters. And Chattanooga has so many places that are not only fun and enriching but also affordable and accessible for our community.
Here are some of the best local resources, discounts, and accommodations that many trach families don’t even know exist.
???? FREE Admission for Your Nurse or Caregiver
This is huge. If your child has a nurse with them, many Chattanooga attractions allow that nurse to enter for free as a caregiver. This currently includes:
Tennessee Aquarium
Chattanooga Zoo
Creative Discovery Museum
YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga
Each location may ask for some kind of caregiver verification (badge, documentation, membership form), but they all recognize the role of medical caregivers and allow them in without purchasing a separate ticket.
This makes outings easier, safer, and so much more accessible.
???? SNAP / EBT Discounts at Local Attractions
If your family receives SNAP benefits, several Chattanooga attractions participate in the national Museums for All program. This gives families deeply discounted admission with an EBT card and ID.
I double-checked these for you:
Creative Discovery Museum
- Admission is $5 per person for up to four guests.
- They also offer a deeply discounted AccessDiscovery membership for EBT families.
Tennessee Aquarium
- Participates in Museums for All.
- Families with SNAP/EBT can receive discounted tickets for up to four guests.
Chattanooga Zoo
- Admission is just $5 per adult and $2 per child for SNAP families.
- Valid for up to four guests per card.
These discounts make regular outings doable and budget-friendly — especially when you’re juggling medical costs.
???? The Creative Discovery Museum: Tons of Perks for Our Kids
If you’re looking for a trach-friendly outing, CDM is a gem. Beyond the SNAP discount, they offer:
- A universal (adult-sized) changing table, which is massive for our community
- Strollers you can borrow
- Sensory bags available at Guest Relations
- Lockers for storing supplies
- A quieter environment early in the day
- They also shared something really helpful:
- On Wednesday nights they do a deep clean, so Thursday morning is the cleanest time to visit — great for families nervous about germs.
???? The YMCA: A Secret Resource for Trach Families
Most families don’t know this one:
The YMCA allows you to register your nurse as your child’s caregiver. This means:
- Your child can go to the Kid Zone for free while you work out
- Your nurse can accompany them as needed
- You can take a breather without worrying about medical safety
- The Y staff becomes another layer of your village
- For many of us, this is the first step back into something that feels like normal life.
???? Finley Stadium’s New Sensory Room
Finley Stadium recently added a sensory room for families who need a quieter, regulated space during games or events.
For trach families — especially kids with sensory needs, medical anxiety, or multiple diagnoses — this can make attending community events actually doable.
???? Chattanooga is Full of Possibilities
If you’re new to life with a trach, I know stepping out the front door feels like climbing a mountain. The bags, the equipment, the suction, the what-ifs — it all piles up.

But here’s what I want you to hear:
Our kids deserve a childhood in this beautiful city just as much as anyone else.
They deserve museums and fish tanks and goats and slides.
They deserve fresh air and joy and adventure.
And you deserve moments that remind you you’re more than a medical parent.
There are so many places here that are safe, fun, affordable, and welcoming to our community — even if it doesn’t feel that way at first.
If it takes time to build confidence, that’s okay. If it takes ten minutes to leave the house, that’s okay. If you bring the suction machine everywhere you go, that’s more than okay.
You are doing an incredible job.
And Chattanooga has so much waiting for you and your child.
